part 1: something wicked this way comes……..

Never would I have imagined that such a singular quote (from Macbeth, NOT the novel by Bradbury NOR of the Ms. Marple genre) would be the ticking time bomb within my psyche, alerting me that ‘something wicked this way comes…’

“By the pricking of my thumbs….”

I’ve spoken and written of/lamented and wondered upon, the ability of a song to take me back. To regress my mind and soul to a time and age where I was less or perhaps slighter and underdeveloped while experiencing something which would change me, morph me, evolve me, sometimes improve me….

Literature and poetry have always drawn me in, with their ability to call me like a lyrical melody. Words and phrases stick to me and attribute to my moods like a muse even when there is no music present. So it isn’t any wonder that music goes above and beyond that ability within me when I absorb it completely.

Music is a wondrous gift. A useful tool. A delicious knife. The searing pain before a pleasure. A glorious curse while an eviscerating cure. Ask me, someday, about my love/hate relationship with all things musical…

But when a song takes you back to a bleak moment, the darkest memory, one has cause to wonder why music exists at all…
